[Westell numbers]

For the three months ended Sept. 30, 1997: total revenues were &21.7M, prepresenting a 3.0% increase over revenues of $21.1M in the same period last year. . . . the loss from continuing operations was $4.5M or .12 per share, compared to a loss of $1.9M, or .05 per share in the same quarter last year.

"The increased loss was expected and was driven largely by year over year increases in research and market development costs of approximately $3.0M, primarily to support new product developments, such as testing and trials of the Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) and Rate Adaptive Digital Subscriber Line (RADSL). Also there was an increase of approximately $1M in general and administrative costs to handle expanded corporate infrastructure in domestic and international operations, which included $100,000 non-recurring expense. . . ."

I don't know if this is in line with expectations.

Andy/All,

Here is some detail on Alcatel's chip set for ADSL/ATM. Any Idea how this compares to MOT & TXN? Sounds like still only one Modem per.

"Networking ICs -- Reduces chip count on ADSL offering --
Alcatel packs more into 'Dynamite' modem chip set
By Peter Clarke

"Brussels, Belgium - Alcatel Mietec has reworked Dynamite, its rate adaptive asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) modem chip set, by reducing its chip count and power consumption and, thereby, the cost."

DMT Modem and ATM interface in a single .35-micron chip and the Analog front end reduced from from .7 to .5-micron. two chips running @ 3.3v reducing power consumption from greater than 3watts down to less than 2watts.

8-Mbit/s downstream data transmission and 800-kbit/s upstream over 3,000-ft.

2-Mbit/s downstream and 640-Mbit/s upstream over 15,000-ft.

"The new chip set will allow makers of routers and PC NICs to enter the ADSL market with a fully compliant ANSI T1E1.413 issue 2 product that is guaranteed to work with a large number of Alcatel-based services that will be deployed in 1998. It will allow them to develop cost-effective solutions for all segments of the industry," said David Long, Mietec's strategic marketing manager.

The two-chip set is scheduled to come out in the first quarter of 1998 at $50 in volumes of 50,000 units, meeting original objectives from September 1996.

P.S. Pat's voice not at all what I expected, it was good to hear you.
