Yes, that's the trend whose outcome I am curious to see. Government spending will be on infrastructure, shoring up financial institutions and helping the credit markets for cars, credit cards, etc. Most likely, consumer habits will be refocused over the government intervention period (the next 5-10 years maybe).

But I can't guess what the consumer mentality will be at the end. Will people rush back to their old ways, full of pent up demand? Or will they find they don't miss all that stuff they didn't really need before anyway?

I was at a major mall not long ago and noticed how clothing made up the majority of the stores, something we don't HAVE to upgrade that often in tight times, followed by overpriced home decorating stuff, most of which I couldn't stand stylewise anyway, and also don't need.

My next purchase is a secondhand rowing machine so I can keep exercising inside in the winter months. Seems more useful than 3-4 overpriced clothing items when my closet is already full (whose isn't?).
