My father is 83. We try to give Volker a break for his age but hope he has a lil energy to give. And he (my father) has come to greatly appreciate Carter. Carter spoke the reality to us and was trashed for it. And has been ever since. His energy plan is still the best yet. But we preferred the "sunny day" of Reagan. And here we are decades later. We must sacrifice. I am not sure Obama will push us to that as Carter tried to do. We are lost if we do not.

My father is/was a lifelong Repub after leaving pure dem Alabama. His appreciation of Carter, though, grows and grows. And of all our politicians, the man was never ever bought. Nor ever has been.

Carter pushed for alternate fuel sources, but considering their total lack of cost effectiveness at the time, I don't consider that as dealing with reality very well. Sometimes the best way to deal with a reality you don't like is to accept it and make the best of it, rather than try to get out of it in ways that are more problematic than the original issue.
