<< I would be rewarding them for scoring 8 in the last to minutes>>

I said nice job and they got their reward - they won. Now I have to get that flame lit earlier in the game. We can't count on putting up 8 points in 2 minutes each week or we'll lose. Plus their parents love it when I run them ragged so they go home and fall asleep after practice. Bet there aren't many bedtime arguments on thursday night <g>

<< Just seems to me that losing a game would shake their confidence and make them think they're not as good as they thought they were>>

Sometimes that's a good thing - it makes them work smarter and harder. We aren't the best team in our league even though we have the best record. What we are is the most intense team in our league. We could be better on offense BUT we have the Baltimore Ravens defense. Aggressive, smothering and intense. If we win it all it will be because we play more physical ball

Basketball IS a contact sport! It's not football - it's all about how contact is made. It's important that in the first five minutes of the game we introduce ourselves <G> to the other team and let them know we're going to rip the ball from their hands, cover them like paper, dive on the floor and fight for possession etc etc. That type of play either demoralizes the other team OR makes them quit.

Now before anyone thinks this guy is over the top - I tell these kids that they need to take this same intensity into the classroom because they're competing there too! The lessons involved in intensity and work ethic transfer to school as well. This isn't just about winning at basketball.....this is about winning at life and learning to do so as a collective or team.
