I realize that the guy didn't outright kill anyone.

Well so far, the body count is 2 - people who committed suicide as a direct result of being ruined by Madoff.

In my book, he is just as responsible for the deaths as if he pulled the trigger. They wouldn't be dead if it weren't for him.

There was a stat out there when it first broke that ALL property crimes in the US for 2007 were around 8 billion. That was an eye opener comparison to me.

(that, and Merrill's write downs in '08 being more than they have made in profit the history of the company.)
