Actually I do have an issue with the next Treasury secretary having tax problems Yeah, it is a pretty big deal. It is important to recognize that "tax problem" can mean a lot of different things. Lots of people get tax liens, like Joe, who are just honest taxpayers who have not been able to pay all they owe. I have seen many real estate closings held up while a lien is cleared in which the taxpayer didn't even know the lien had been filed. So, Joe's situation is pretty understandable. The case on a Treasury Secretary who has been audited and failed to make proper resolution is far more complex. There are huge unanswered questions about how this so-called "oversight" happened. At the very least a detailed accounting of how this mistake was made must be made public and a satisfactory explanation obtained. There is nearly 0% chance a tax professional (CPA or tax-attorney) would have made a mistake like this. If he was doing his return himself, which would be strange for someone in this category, then it really brings into question whether his tax knowledge is sufficient to be in charge of IRS. More facts need to come out but it is very difficult for me to see how this guy's nomination can go forward. It is a big deal.
