Torture is abhorrent and is declared so by American leadership, American law, the values, and the principles which define our culture. The US justice department is tasked with defining the prohibitions, as well as appropriate or inappropriate treatment of prisoners torturous or otherwise.

Treatment may be objectionable without rising to the level defined legally as torture. Yet the word gets over used in attempts to capture every kind of conduct which one might identify as objectionable.

With an Obama Presidency we can expect to see changes in Department of Justice personnel and attitudes, consequently we can probably expect to see some changes in our definitions on this topic.
