So by quoting ben franklin, are you saying that if bush admin use of "torture" actually helped prevent attacks for 8 years, you would prefer several 9/11s in lieu of that? PS what about overall homeland security--must agree its much improved than it was on 9/11 even without questionable methods? I know its a tough question for you because you have a need to hate bush that denies any accomplishments. Need to look at things analytically like obama, not emotionally and dogmatically like bush.

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety"...Ben Franklin.

This remark, while originating before the revolution, was commonly used amongst the signers of the Declaration of Independence, who knew that attaching their names to the document would be a death sentence should the revolution fail (the quote's original attribution was not to Franklin at all, and was from decades earlier than the time of the revolution).

It has no meaning in the context you cited it. No American has given up any "essential liberty" in the US under the Bush administration, and in fact, everything Bush has done, from the war to the wiretaps to Gitmo, have all been approved by Congress.
