<<<None of those people laid off will starve to death. It could be a lot worse. And maybe it will be. But it's a little early to declare the end of the world.

7% unemployment in itself is not the end of the world but it is the direction and rate of change that is worrisome.

The worry is that we are on the edge of a cliff. Most economist see double digit unemployment looming.

You don't have to have experienced 25% unemployment to know that is not where you want to go. There are plenty of books describing the misery of a depression.

The smaller government advocates have had it their way since 1980 and their actions have led to this crisis. They are still fervently preaching that it should be left up to the private sector to get us out of this mess.

It is time for government to reverse course. Taking steps now to prevent unemployment going into free fall seems like a good idea. There is a role for government to take action.
