I just watched Hannity's exclusive interview with Rush. An excellent effort by both to rehabilitate his literal remark about hoping Obama fails. They got it back to the issues and political philosophy....

But what I found really disturbing was the glee with which both Rush and Hannity distanced themselves from (Rush's description in the interview)..the blue-blood east coast republican elite. Rush claims those so-called republicans don't want to be associated with people from...the souuuuth (Rush's inflection).

Now, really...how stupid is this. Rush and Hannity claim to be the voice of the true conservative movement(couldn't stop complimenting each other) and their first step is to insult another branch of the republican party, one that has a better record on promoting small government than does the southern, rural branch.

Do they want the Republican party bigger or smaller? Do they want to win elections? If so, why insult, openly a branch of your own party....and, more importantly for the future, the branch that WRITES THE CHECKS. The party is not funded by the rural, southern or alaska branches. It's the CEOs and busines side that does that. They don't really care about abortion or gay rights, but they do care about big government and national defense.

So, Rush and Sean, why insult the east coast wing? Why make the tent smaller when it is already smaller than the other guy's tent? How does this improve republican chances?

One obvious theory is that Rush and Sean are not really interested in Republicans winning. They do better personally and financially when they are the voice of opposition and can appeal to the specific part of the base that pays attention to their spiel. That is not the George Will, David Brooks intellectual crowd...so toss them out. Insult them. So what if they don't sign checks next time around....we'll still sell books.

Seems if the republicans intend to win elections they should insult no branch of their historic support but find ways to build common ground with them all. That is what Reagan did.
