I can make a very strong case based upon my eBay SUV searches, that the bottom has fallen out of the used SUV market. I would suggest that used SUVs have gotten so cheap that they would pay handsomely to drive even with $4 gasoline. The up front capital car cost has become quite small. At today's $2ish gasoline, the argument is even stronger.

I bought my wife a used Highlander limited for 12k 2 weeks ago. He had paid 38k in 02. He was a local banker that detailed the car every weekend and had it serviced religiously. He had a 20 mile commute with very few stop lights. Essentially drives like a new car and looks like one as well. W/the V 6 it still gets 20+ mpg up and down the mountain.

"Now the automakers are getting pasted and I understand that there are about 100 acres of brand new Mercedes sitting in the Port of Los Angeles begging for a new home. So it might be the case that these new - assumedly efficient - cars might ge pushed out and over the old cheap SUVs just to clear inventory."

My son bought a new Cadillac Escalade 2008 down 25% from MSRP.
Yet MercedsBenz doesn't seem to want to play ball and offer much of a discount. Why?

I'm going for a new kitchen and the same guy that tried to sell me one last June is now telling me that the cabinet makers are RAISING their prices to compensate for dropping sales so...... the kitchen would cost the same, now, as then.

I said "Bullshit" You guys are blowing smoke. Name one thing the hasn't gone DOWN. He said check the vendors, and I said "tell them to check costs" Wood, steel, aluminum, gas, oil, and, maybe wages, are down. DUH.

Go figure
