l2s, agree. health insurance costs have greatly reduced retirement benefits. many teachers are sending most of their retirement checks to health insurance companies, as retirement health insurance is a contract negotiation item and rarely included in contracts anymore.

also, many of us are not aware that california teachers pay 8% of their salary into STRS retirement. these pensions are not "free."
