I avoid the "what is really stimulus" debate because it always comes down to various ideological assumptions about different kinds of spending. The term has been so distorted at this point that I don't know what it truly means.

My recollection of Obama's many campaign and acceptance speeches was a constant theme of helping those who were hurt by the last decade of economic policies, in many ways. Without going back to cherrypick a bunch of quotes, it should be no shock or secret now that this administration will put a lot of government resources behind those direct aid and support programs.

As Obama said repeatedly this week, the old formula of cutting this tax or that tax and expecting sustainable prosperity for all has clearly not worked. He was elected with a mandate to go in another direction, and he is.
