CJ, with all due respect, your dad's stories whether true or exaggerations are not the entire story re: korea. Folks are bashing Ten because he is korean and some might get a rise out of it. Sigman Rhee was a despot and not popular and the commies led by "Dad" were far worse. Whether korea was a proxy war by russia and/or china to test the wests resolve or whether it was a civil war between communist north and SK, it was worth defending and thus creating a democratic and prosperous state. We have troops at risk there for sure, but it has been mostly peaceful, albeit dangerous for 56 years. SK should bear the cost going forward and they with us should put a timetable in place so US can leave in next 5 years. They will also need a US umbrella guarantee as well as US taking part in the regional negotiations with NK nutcases.
Stories of glass in cokes are out of context and not helpful.

"Besides, the South Koreans didn't really want us there."

That is true. My dad tells stories of our soldiers being warned about buying stuff from street vendors. Ground glass in Cokes, etc.

Wow. That bad.
