My mother, gfrandather and both grandparents as well as many Uncles and Aunts lived through the depression, so I know it was bad. I was very poor as a child. I know what poverty is.

However the debate I was engaged in was whether what the President is doing will "stimulate" the economy i.e. will it create 4 million jobs as it is designed to do. If it is as you suggest a welfare plan then, lets call it that and create a massive welfare program. I suspect that we are going to see that anyway and that it will be made worse by the so-called stimulus plan.

I believe that the only way out of this mess is to get individual and corporate balance sheets in order which in turn wil get the economy moving again. This is the lesson of history. Trying to get people to spend and borrow more than they can afford caused this problem and will make it worse. My post addressed the question of whether the New Deal stimulated growth in jobs, not whether it relieved people's pain and suffering. I for one do believe that properly structured relief programs will become necessary to avoid mass starvation and homelessness. Obama's program does not address this at all.

Lastly, I feel to compelled to comment on your castigation of those on the thread who have physical gold, stored food and guns. I know many of them. They feel as I do that despite all efforts to try to control an out of control government on their part, they lost the battle. They believe that bad times are coming and we may have anarchy. They feel that the only choice they have is to protect themselves and their families. They are not buying guns to shoot some starving person who knocks on their door to ask for food. They are buying guns to protect themslves from those who will not knock but break the door and demand what they have. If you are repulsed by the thought of shooting someone who would threaten your family in that manner, that is your judgment and you can act accordingly. I intend to do my best to protect my family from that kind of thing. Hopefully it won't cme to that and I am not predicting that it willbut it is far from impossible and in my view it is becoming more likely every day.
