No. My point was that Japan consumes much more than it previously did. Part of this is demographic shift as Japan is the "oldest" society in the world (i.e., more people in older pop decile). I haven't seen recent savings rate data, but it is obvious that Japanese youth (if you can find any <g>) have quite different work ethic than parent's generation, which sacrificed everything to restore Japan's economy after the war.

I have noticed that many Japanese have been "trained" to buy new appliances every year or two and dispose of older ones even though they are perfectly good. It was enough to make a thrifty old New Englander shudder!
