Your right. I would include myself in that characterization;believing what I want to believe.
It is hard not to be objective when interpreting the political arena. Politics and fiscal policy are entwined. In this country we can not have one without the other. Congress and the Senate decide how they will spend taxpayers dollars. In fact they also decide how much we should or not be taxed.

That "bunch of crap made in China" will end up costing us dearly if we do not wake up to the fact every dollar spent on an American made product produces jobs and tax revenue here at home and every dollar spent on goods overseas depletes our wealth.

Unfortunately I tend to agree with you on a nasty Depression having the effect of a wake up call. It is not what I would like to see happen. Far too many good citizens would suffer greatly as well their dependants. Our elected leaders, those inept politicians, ultimately decide our fate not the other way around. Regulation of the banking industry is their department not the average "Joe Sixpack" ( I hate that Wall St terminology). The consumer is driven by his/her obsession to satisfy their needs as varied as they are. The Regulatory bodies,we entrust our welfare to, govern the standards we as a nation are ruled by, reside in both the House and the Senate. Maybe Slider is right. It is amazing how people haven't taken to the streets to protest our legislative failures. But I think this will inevitably change because the failures that occurred yesterday will be repeated tomorrow. Stimulus packages will not change our ultimate course.

Nothing will buy you happiness. It simply can not be bought.
Being older I would rather have my youth back than the dollars saved over the years. Money can be replaced with hard work but not one's youth.

and so it goes...
