John;

in which he argued we were headed for depression era economics based on his observations of movements of globalized capital.

But John, that's not what happened. The meltdown in our economy was of our own doing. It was caused by a US housing meltdown. It doesn't count to predict something, but have the cause wrong. How does that help anyone? If you argue the securitization of housing is movements of globalized capital - again you would be wrong since that didn't happen until well after 99.

I just don't understand, in economic terms, how we can subsidize all these services and expect them to create demand--lasting demand that will be there when the money runs out.

Wealth is not created that way. At the end of the day there has to be something created that other people and nations will give something of value for.
