I have heard Republicans* talk about temporarily cutting the payroll tax. I think that would be a good way of stimulating the economy. You could have a spending bill that replaces 50% of FICA taxes for six months.

That wouldn't be tilted to the "rich" since there's a cap on FICA taxes. It would put money in consumers hands and let them decide on how it should be spent, not a bunch of politicians and lobbyists.

FICA collections run around $66.5 billion (employee portion only) a month. Half that times 6 would be about $200 billion. A lot smaller than the porkulus bill.

*BTW I heard Newt Gingrich mention this idea on Bill Bennett's show this morning.
