Because they will close ranks around him and Rush annoys enough people that it will drive the party even deeper into marginalization. Did you see where the trustee in charge of Madoff's assets says he cannot find any trace of Madoff ever buying any securities for clients? Here I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and thought he resorted to the Ponzi scheme to get past some tough times. But, it looks like it was a scam from the get go.
