I've been interested in the last ten years to see the fetishism that surrounded food....starting first in CA. What started at Chez Panisse and environs as a reasonable focus on fresh, locally-grown, with a minimum of fertilizers eventually morphed into organic uber alles, raw-only, etc. It's very similar to what we saw in the stock market bubble around the turn of the 21st century, and the recent RE debacle.

I'm no fan of genetically-modified, chemically treated food. The best way to avoid it is to buy and prepare your own meals.

A dirty secret of many hi fiber prepared foods is that the fiber is wood pulp. Yummy.

Words like "natural" mean nothing. Even "organic" means little...unless a food has the green organic seal. Organic farming can be incredibly costly. I eat organic meats (nonorganic are treated prophylactically with antibiotics) and drink organic milk...but don't generally sweat the rest.

A few simple rules:

Buy foods with five ingredients or less.

Follow Michael Pollan's 9-word edict:
Eat food.
Not too much.
Mostly plants.
