Gosh, that brought back memories. The first telephone I can remember was mandatory because my dad was a state patrolman and on call all the time. This was the very late 1930's. Our number was Hazeltine 246-J. My brother and I were given strict orders to NEVER touch that black thing that sat on a small table in the long hall way, about in the center of the house. When I was about 5 or 6 my dad let me call a cousin in downtown Denver (we lived in a suburb north of the city). When I heard "Operator" I dutifully told her I wanted "East 6636" and was soon talking to my cousin. That was some 67 years ago and I can remember it like it was last week.

I can remember when the big thing was to call my aunt who lived in Virginia on Christmas. The whole family would talk on that call. Long distance was very expensive and not done much back then.

Back when I was in the army and about to get married my bride to be called me in Germany and reversed the charges. That probably cost the army about $200.
