My grandparents lived in Grand Lake, CO when I was young. At that time the population was only a few hundred. They had a big wooden box of a phone that hung on the kitchen wall. You would take the receiver off the hook and turn the crank a couple times to get an operator. They didn't use numbers, just the name of the person they were calling. I remember my grandmother telling me many families didn't even have a telephone. My grandfather was the only plumber in town, so that necessitated the phone, I guess.
