Govt cant run a business worth a shit with federal bureacrats. How about a draft? Take guys like Jack Welch and draft them to be CEOs of companies like AIG and pay them highest G salary allowable. If back in the day, you could draft 18 year olds to go to war, you can draft the long in the tooth crowd to fight this war.

What has been the benefit of propping up AIG, which is likely to fail before it is over anyway?

You just prop up one set people versus another. Better to just let them fail (it was their own corporate policy that got them in trouble) and cut out the middleman.
