E. Europe was important for past generations of Americans who came from there. Many of a certain Ethinic group -highly visible in finance and media- are from there.

Same goes for Western Europe. The roots are being forgotten and they see themselves as a totally different entity now.

Only Canadians are a bunch of Yankees missing the Queen of England.

East Europe actually consists of several individual countries, which are very unlike each other.

A country like Ukraine has excellent demographics on paper (old people died), excellent health (you don't want to be unhealthy in Ukraine!) etc. But, certain people were either killed by Stalin or emigrated, leaving a vacuum in certain areas. Ukraine is not like Prague where you can find classical music on every corner. Worse, all the leading politicians grew up under communism, and they still have huge flaws in their systems.

The main problem with Ukraine is, that the Russian language is so big, that there is little use for other languages. This means that the western influence is not reaching common people, and that they don't know simple things like "what is wrong and what is right" or "what's mine and what's not mine". For instance, many rich people own land that the law says that nobody can buy. They got very surprised to hear that Madoff was reported by his sons - because they assume that all rich people are lucky crooks supported by their family.

Fortunately, Ukraine is a democracy and they have full access to knowledge, unlike people in Russia. And I hope that the current crisis improves things.

Hi energyplay, I know it's difficult to generalise but at what sort of price conventional oil would you say the oil sands are economically viable (thoughts inspired after hearing pitch from an inventor of new technologies for extraction!)
