Iraq could have largest oil reserves "Could" is the operative word. Oil reserves is probably one of the most lied about stats there is... from countries to companies. And with Iraq negotiating with companies to exploit the resource it sure gives them an incentive to exagerate the value of the "prize". Then you have the issue of "proven" or "unproven". I was surprised to see Canada as high as it is. If you scroll down it has a chart with Canada second and Iraq 4th. en.wikipedia.org You could be right about Iraq, but who really knows?

Iraq is actually #1 That's why the French and Russians wanted to lift the sanctions against Saddam. They had negotiated HUGE contracts with Saddam's regime to develop and exploit these reserves and this was part of the reason they were opposed to Bush pushing towards a military confrontation that would force Saddam to comply with the cease fire agreement. I still submit that it was necessary to bring Saddam down in order to prevent the UN from becoming another League of Nations. But it's was also important to prevent that oil from being developed and financing Saddam's grandiose plans to become the next "Salah-Ad-Din" (Saladin) and restore Baghdad as the capital of the Arab world. Iraq is the future of the Persian Gulf and another reason why I think we may find the events of the past 5 years to be of major importance. Who influences that supply of oil is going to impact the global geo-political power balance for decades to come. Better for us to have Iraq in our sphere of influence than being controlled by Russia or China. Hawk
