<< FC will be used for storage, peripheral connections, and other environments (islands) that don't need to communicate with the outside world. >> Vincent, Thanks for your response. I agree that GE will be huge and that FC will be also there, mostly used for storage. I do disagree greatly with your statement above. Right now NTT is working on a FC to ATM gateway that will allow the world's fastest LANs (FC) to get right on the WAN. This is not irrelevant. I believe the product/s will come out in the next six months. With places such as Japan, there doesn't exist the same legacy and ethernet infrastucture like is here in the US so it is easier for them to move right to Fibre Channel if they want. Some very large companies are doing that right now, and I can wildly assume that they would want to connect on an ATM/SONET WAN for obvious reasons. Also, while I agree FC will be used primarly in storage at first, many should realize that the 'storage' niche (SANs) will be very big business. On another note, while GE is going to be big because the name is so familiar and it will do the job, some people will also realize that Fibre Channel is just as easy to upgrade to the LAN backbone and data centerand it may be cheaper and faster. Not to mention the advantages it has in being the same protocal that will be used in the future for the nearby storage (so everything can connect easier). Will FC be as big as GE in the LAN backbone...no way. But they might take a little of the LAN side too, IMHO. What are some good ideas for GE in the future, besides the obvious BAY and CSCO, who seems to be having a little problems getting started. DO you like MRVC? thanks pigboy.
