<<...Is anyone seeing any food shortages at local grocery stores ?...>>

I'm seeing NO food shortages in the Chicago area -- at Trader Joes and at Dominicks (owned by Safeway)...I do notice that Dominicks seems to be running a record number of promotions -- I just saved over $20 on my recent trip and the grocery store gave me a gift card for gas at any BP station in the month of March...Sales must be down or the stores wouldn't be discounting like this.

I think your cheese observation is correct. I was in our local, somewhat upscale, grocery yesterday. There were no cheese tastings out. I figured it was because it was too expensive and there was no return.

My wife asked me why we don't do cheese plates at parties anymore. One reason is that the group has changed from adults to kids, but another is that it's too expensive -- St. Agur at $17/lb? I don't think so.

i haven't been able to get gorgonzola in my regular store for weeks now (and yes the imported cheese display was notably empty...instead of stacking the cheeses front to back, they had the cheese there displayed 'horizontally' to make the cooler look full)

i think the probable explanation is that stores are cutting their available inventory of perishable items, especially the gourmet, expensive lines....i also noted there was a smaller selection of the fresh store baked breads
