i haven't been able to get gorgonzola in my regular store for weeks now (and yes the imported cheese display was notably empty...instead of stacking the cheeses front to back, they had the cheese there displayed 'horizontally' to make the cooler look full)

Oh you poor thing.......you can't get your favorite cheese???!! How you suffer during these hard times!

Fresh Market, where I shop, has definitely cut back on their higher priced imported cheeses but has started carrying more artisan cheeses made in the states. The only imported cheeses I will not scrimp on in Parmigiana Reggiano and Gorgonzola Dolce. I tried those little crumbled thingies grocery stores offer and would rather go without.

Restaurants here have begun to offer good discounts on their higher priced wines, probably more to reduce inventory than anything else. Even the chains. Ducale Gold was almost 1/2 price at Carrabas the other day.

I know a gal that is the manager of a local deli at a high end grocery store. They have not been selling the higher cost items and the higher end salads, etc.

People are buying staples and avoiding gourmet foods.
