I don't know or really care. Madoff is a criminal, but so are the people who got 25% returns, year after year. Some of them are bound to have made many times their initial investment, and every bit of it is other people's new investments. Madoff had none of their money actually invested.

That alone is bound to have soaked up a LOT of the money. I think Madoff and his entire family should have to prove that none of their funds came from the scam, or lose everything they have.

Madoff is a distraction from the main crime, which is millions of Americans losing their homes and retirements, more and more every day. All because of the financial shenanigans pulled by the supposedly trustworthy, non-criminal, banks. None of THEM are going to jail. The scale of the loss dwarf's Madoff's crime.
