Any idea of what the actual salaries are?

I have a friend who is mid-level at one of the bulge bracket investment banks. His annual salary is ~$120k, and expectations of "bonus" are ~$150k (bad year)-$400k (good year).

His Manhatten rent for a normal 2 bedroom is ~$65k per year, then you've got utilities/food/whatnot for wife and two kids. He couldn't live on his $120k salary given rent (for a normal 2 bedroom apartment) and income tax.

One problem with interpreting all this bonus hullabaloo is that in the investment banks the "bonus" is pretty much assumed, it's not necessarily a reward for exceptional behavior/work/performance. I don't know the story with AIG, but it may be similar. If the company just raised the person's salary to $300k per year and paid zero bonus, would that be OK?
