while it's reflex to try and save someone it's really not a good plan in the water without training. Frantic people are a real handful. Just remember if they push you under bring them under with you and they will let go to resume thrashing.

That is why most water rescues are effected with devices. A drowning victim can drown a much stronger person.

If one must do it without a device it must be done from an angle that the victim does not observe.
