Boeing is not a good example for many reasons. To begin with, like Airbus, Boeing outsources most of their components of the aircraft just like any automobile company.

An automobile company will outsource these parts to companies who specialize in these parts, thereby providing lower costs.

In contrast Boeing and Airbus outsource many of their parts for political reasons. Aircraft buyers like the Pentagon and their Congressional apparatchiks are well pleased when parts are sourced from their district, or their nation. This does not necessarily correlate well with the low-cost producer.

Sunny Jim;

Emerging market countries do not have these costs and hence the unlevel playing field.

You can always rationalize an argument to fit a particular political slant or ideology. Some things in one country are cheaper than in another - or paid for differently - but does that mean we should turn back the clock and do away with environmental protections or worker protections?

Sure China might have little cost for medical insurance, but energy cost in America is one of the cheapest in the world because that cost is nationalized. The cost is picked up by the tax payer in the form of military expense. Different advantages in different countries - so what? Get use to it, suck it up and move on.

Sooooo, China produces cheap plastic crap that destroys their environment and is sold in WalMart while America produces jets or new drugs. Which is better for their country? .....The constant whining about this or that just places blame on failure on others when that blame should be directed right here to poor management. The autos for instance; Toyota seems to have no problem building cars right here in America with American workers while stupid decisions across the board have ruined our own home grown auto makers. The problem isn't that health care is too much, the problem is that people like me won't buy a Ford but will buy a Toyota.

I don't want to go back. I don't want to build cheap junk plastic crap to sell in WalMart and plug up our rivers with pollution and poison our children with poisoned air and wages that won't even support basic human needs - like health care. Why not instead be very progressive to look to those jobs that will meet tomorrows needs? New great jobs based on just those "proprietary knowledge" that you rationalize away as meaningless that great successful American companies have now?
