"What about all the A-n, B-n, C-n etc etc steppings?"

You know the answer to that. Or should. B step fixed the problems. C upped the top speeds and cut power. D was more of the same. E step was 90nm and was problem awesome right out of the box. So the customer wasn't getting multiple broken steppings. In fact, they didn't get any broken steppings in that the processors didn't work right or were quirky. From the customer point of view, the first ones weren't quite as fast as expected. Like that never happened before to either company.

You are being disingenuous here. And you know it.
