The cost would be worth it to insure an accurate result. You could pro-rate that number for the tiny electorates but in larger contests, we have seen that hundreds if not a few thousand votes can be routinely mishandled. Instead of trying to undo that knot, just have a do-over with close supervision. I know that the electorate can change slightly in a few months, but not enough to make a drastic difference, IMHO. I'd rather see a clean straight-up re-vote than go through court case after court case to discover that hundreds of precincts will, indeed, do a few things slightly differently. Well, what a shock, people aren't perfect.
