+tive mention in Briefing:
Cymer Inc (CYMI) 28 1/16: chip-equipment
maker received a positive write-up in the New York
Times. Article rebuts rumors that company is
having problems with its lasers. Notes that CYMI
sees 40% growth in FY98. Stk currently flat in
pre-market activity. (Posted 8:55 ET).

Darrell, I don't know what your source is, but it is patently wrong. I have lived here for 5 years and there is not now nor has there ever been even the slightest possibility that there would be any link between China's currency (which for years has been a jole in this part of the world) and the US dollar. I suspect that today's problems with the Hang Seng are due to 3 things:

(1) First and foremost, the HK Monetary raised the inter bank offer rate here further in an effort to curb leverage utilizing currency speculation by some of the banks here. All other rates go up with it.

(2) Templeton's Mark Mobius (aka Baldo here!) made a comment over the weekend that he expects share prices in HK to go down further, and

(3) The announcement by the Swiss that they plan to "dump" 14 tons of gold, causing gold prices to tumble (HK has a huge jewellery section, and this also caused real problems with mining stocks in Australia.)

jess.
