Anyone living in a country of any size should realize that their government is consuming them. They should take extra steps to ensure their economic and personal survival. Their government has a life of its own and that life needs to consume other life (in its own country or another) in order to survive. Thats why countries like Britain and America, which grew at the expense of other countries, now have to leach off their own people because imperialism is no longer possible.

Only things you can do are individual - spend less than you earn, learn to invest wisely, teach your children well, figure out how to get out of the focus of government, maybe get a piece of land you like and grow some carrots and stuff ... on the latter, there are worse things than to be surrounded by your own greenery, i can't imagine any other life, been spoiled all these years, never spent any length of time in other than a rural situation

The dependence on oil is deadly, not just 'foreign oil' but oil period ... overuse and misuse of debt as well, yes, but together with running out of cheap oil the two will really make for a crunch at some inconvenient time quite soon

Term limits would help for sure ... one situation you folks can achieve at times is to have split government, maybe the best is a dem president with a repub congress, then the demented hawks can't go blow up the world at huge cost and the lefties can't mortgage your grandchildren's future for hand-outs now ... Clinton and Gingrich, both odious in their own ways but it worked, eh ... closest you can get to this in a parliamentary system is a minority government, and it's not really the same thing as it can be brought down with a vote of non-confidence, while the admin acts as effective dictatorship while it's in ... system has its advantages in other ways, just not that

... but that's politics ... bart's charts and some of the commentary here are really good, great thread to lurk you guys, carry on ... cheers

>>And you are right, the partisan politics is cover for our sorry state of entrenched lifetime political hacks. The lack of term limits is the missing Holy Grail. <<

benwood, you only need to look at CA government to realize that term limits *are not* the holy grail. we have republicans acting like socialists and claiming, in public, "there is nothing more you can do to me because i can't run for election again."

CA government is a complete fire bombed carcass - and we have term limits.
