Maybe someday when a traveler can input start and destination points and get charged electronically, but not now. Many toll roads have that now in the form of RFID technology. I have a friend in Massachusetts who commutes to downtown Boston every day on the Mass Pike. She has a "pass" mounted on her car and sails through the express lane. The equipment reads her card and she is sent a statement once a month reflecting the charges, which are debited from a bank account.

speed pass i think they call it.. i have had one for a decade takes care of all tolls between pa and boston and bridges etc.. you build up a base amount and when it gets low you get notice to build up more money again. since i haven't been driving in the last couple of years i have no idea if now it just drafts or charges the cc. trip from philly to boston were on average 45min less because of no longer waiting at toll booths
