The Order or Society of Cincinnati has its history in a Roman farmer who became a General who was given dictator-like power during the war and then when the war was over, gave the power back to the Senate and went back to his farm. The idea being that he served when needed, but instead of exploiting the power given to him to win the war, went back to the plow.
