SEOUL (AP-Dow Jones)--South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. announced Monday that it has developed the world's smallest and lightest portable digital video disc player, or DVD .

The device is a little larger than a regular videotape - 20 centimeters and 16 centimeters - and weighs only 0.9 kilograms

The DVD is a system that can be used for movies, music or video games. It looks like a CD but holds seven to 14 times as much data. Experts say it is expected to eventually replace those systems.

Named P-Theatre, Samsung's DVD player can be connected to a regular television, projection television or head-mounted display. Head-mounted like glasses, it can give the effect of looking at a large screen, Samsung said.

The device can play DVDs, video CDs or regular CDs. It also provides a choice of regular or wide screen, it said.

But the player is still only a prototype, and the company said a commercial version of the product will be available in the second half of next year.

Specialized in electronic and semiconductor products, Samsung Electronics is a flagship subsidiary of the Samsung Group, South Korea's largest conglomerate in net assets.
