This photo shows a brick building destroyed in a tornado.

The steel I-beam framework of the building remains, while the bricks have been torn away by the winds.

Because concrete pillars cannot withstand axial motion, a brick building built with concrete pillars, rather than steel, would have been totally destroyed.

The case appears to be that specifiers, designers and building contractors need to be educated in the US about masonry.

Not sure that Americans are totally ignorant about masonry.

It is kind of you to share your opinions in that regard though.

And we all know about the rate of distribution of opinions.

Pretty sure masonry was the dominant construction medium here until it started suffering in regards to economics when compared to the more efficient techniques.

Masons in this country make around $20/hour.

That coupled with the cost of masonry itself and the relative energy inefficiency has prompted most American builders and American consumers to opt for the relatively more affordable and efficient modular structures or insulated frame stucco.

As Brazil continues to evolve and workers begin to earn a more equitable wage, perhaps you will see a rise in more modern construction methodologies also.
