When you go with democracy, then the majority rules and the minority is at the mercy of the majority.

The Baathist "Party" would have certainly been eliminated pretty quick, no matter what, but the individual "members" could have been judged individually. Under Saddam, if you wanted a good job with any responsibilty you almost had to join the party.

I don't think anyone ever wanted to keep the "Republican Guard" around in any context whatsoever, but the "average" soldier probably didn't have any particular bias politically. I would think the VAST majority would have been Sunni and that would have been a problem, but it would have been better to deal with that gradually as S. Africa has done with its army and police.

Well, the Shiites are just getting started in their reign. The Sunni's best hope is that a relatively pragmatic fellow like Maliki stays in power and the more "fervent" muslims never get control.

Oil production in big trouble....

(Reserves most likely greatly OVER-stated....)

Political agreement over division of oil income remains illusive....

Iraq now rated as one of the most CORRUPTION RIDDEN nations on Earth (on close par with Burma)....
