I think the feds want to keep the market up so the Banks can do their public stock offerings and raise needed capital without the feds giving them more, at least for now. although there wil be selloffs as we go. It's a much easier solution than giving them more gov money. All the banks and the fed think buying time will solve all the problems as housing stabilizes and then rises lifting all paper assets tied to housing.
