Christians (me being one)believe that the Bible is the Word of God (not necessarily verbatim),including the Old Testament. In the Old Testament, Moses wrote that the Jewish people were led out of Egypt by God. This was after God had struck down all the first born of the Egyptians. Again, after the Jewish people wandered in the desert for 40 years (because of their complaining and disobedience)God led them into their Promised land of Canaan, while destroying their enemies, including men, women and children. God was not neutral. He comes against evil and uses people to fulfill His will. As far as the circumstances you stated, God would be with one or the other. My interpretation of what God would say is that the German Christians allowed His people and their brothers to die and thus should be punished.
