Perhaps it is wrong for cardiologist surgeons to be counselors at the same time...

Cardiologists are MD's who specialize in diagnosing and treating heart disease. Interventional Cardios do an extra two years of Intern to get their certificate.

However, all MD's can do anything they can talk a hospital and patient into. That is why so many unqualified Docs are out there enlarging breasts.

A Cardio Surgeon normally does not diagnose. The battle between them and the Cardios is which procedure is best. Almost all Cardios, certified or not, now do Cath procedures. That's where the fun and money is.

All specialists live for procedures.

I've been thinking about that a lot since my recent visit to my cardiologist, who put me through all the tests that she offered in her office and no others. You have to be suspicious about that. OTOH, it makes no sense at all to have a cardiologist spend hours with patients talking about such lowly topics as eating eggs and monitoring CRP. It's simply not cost effective. I think a case could be made that cardiologists should take the initiative to make this counseling function happen but I now believe that criticizing cardiologists for not doing it themselves is off target.
