"I love the subject of science -- as a learner and a teacher -- but science for all its bravado and supposed "objective" view (claims to not be man-centric -- ha!!) can never reach the questions of purpose -- science is only really descriptive."

life is the standard of value, ie, our basic alternative is to live or die, and our choices have a large impact on our ability to survive....JDs note on our current economic situation provide some interesting examples of the issues we need to consider...interestingly, the Bible takes same approach, ie, the after life is the reward of virtue...the religious folks just place the empaphasis on life after death rather than on life in this world...(strange)

'enter ye in at the strait gate, for narrow is the path that leadeth to salvation, and few there be that find it...broad is the way that leadeth unto destruction'....my paraphrase..

As with many things, taken in moderation, selfishness can be a good thing. When self interest results in breakthroughs that benefit nearly everyone, selfishness is good. Most breakthroughs are done to achieve something wanted by the individual making the effort. I think its part of humanity's survival instinct. Civil society should provide guidelines (morality and punishment) to encourage beneficial moderate self interest. Current American society is failing to do this.
For example, people are punished for victimless crimes consisting of self destructive addictions (because it negatively affects the bottom line of insurance and pharma corporations) resulting in a police-state that curtails the rights of anyone not in the elite and wastes capital on prisons instead of encouraging creative uses or improving infrastructure. Meanwhile banking executives (who create nothing) destroy the economic future of millions and are rewarded for doing so.
