The mainstream media loves to talk about the "moderate" voters as a monolithic entity. The reality is that "moderate" is just a catch-all term for a vast diverse sea of opinions that cannot easily be classified as "liberal" or "conservative."

What Colin Powell considers "moderate" will not be what other moderates believe in, and that's fine. This is a big country; there is plenty of room for disagreement. But to denigrate political opponents as "extremist" is just pure demagoguery, and in that respect, Powell is no different than Rush, I'm sorry to say.
