too bad science can't teach us that an excessive self interest will eventually lead to the destruction of all humanity.

guess what? it will be the result of science that we use to kill each other.

didn't science enable MBSes and CDSes?

the problem with science is there is no moral component to it.

you might not care now, but when you see your family escorted to the ovens by the more powerful darwinian animal, you may just start to care.

But koan, science is just a bunch of stuff that people choose to believe.

Never mind that that same people that watch their favorite Christian evangelist on their high-tech 50" flatscreen TV getting the signal from a satellite in orbit believe that the earth is 6000 years, fossil evidence of evolution is fake and vote for candidates like Bush!>>

And therein lies the problem. As we have evolved into an existential world, our species is noticing that part of the people understand the complexity of such a world, and others do not really get it.

There is a reason why our country is splitting apart philosphically. It is almost as though there are two sub speciec of humans.

E.g. evolution is a simple fact. It is not an unproven theory. So who are these people who cannot understand that. It is very much like not understanding the earth is round.

The larger problem is that these people who cannot understand evolution is fact have other beliefs just as wrong.

Way OT - Regarding "that the earth is 6000 years old"

Actually, the earth is 6012 years old, according to this precise calculation

answersingenesis.org

I try really hard to respect others' views, and to imagine thinking this way. It's tough.
I never even met anyone who thought this way until I was in College.
BTW, about 40% of Americans believe this.

I actually can understand why fundamentalists are comfortable with a strict, rigid dogma to live by.
It's a concise and simple view of the world, IMO.

I have 2 firm rules, though:

1)don't infuse these beliefs in government or the public schools, and
2) don't try to convince me that your perception of reality is right, and mine is wrong.
