Ciena is backed by Ben Rosen's venture capital firm, the one that did Compaq, and is the acknowledged leader (inventor, if you will) with major contracts already. Lucent is "OEM'ing" a WDM switch by Yurie (Yuri). So you're the information technology officer of a multi-BILLION dollar MAJOR telecom company or Fortune 500 firm (demand is in the BIG firms) and you're going to buy one from POCI for the following reasons:

.....
well, I can't think of any.

Unfortunately Larry I'm a non-techie too so I can't explain in detail how POCI's products fit into WDM.

All I can say is that the rise in their stock price is probably due to contracts announced with Lucent to use their optical filters for optoelectronics devices. (A vote of confidence in their technology).

From their most recent 10K:

The Company continues to aggressively pursue sales, marketing, and technology development efforts for new optical thin films in the rapidly growing telecommunications and semi-conductor industries, which will begin to generate modest incremental revenues in the last half of this calendar year. In the third and fourth quarters of fiscal year 1997, several initial orders were received for thin films from new customers in these business areas. Development efforts on prototype Wavelength Division Multiplexer (WDM) optical filters are continuing.
