They'd better hope they're right.. Because if decreased solar/sunspot activity ACTUALLY IS primarily responsible for climatic change (as I believe it is), they are all going to look rather stupid if we face another Maunder Minimum phase.

But that doesn't matter so long as they get the research money coming their way. They'll be in good company.

Another smart move by the Obama Administration. Investing in a smart electric grid will bring a huge return on investment. It will do so for 3 key parties...1) for the utility companies that will save $35B over the next 20 years from these investments, 2) for consumers who will save on their energy costs, while also having the tools to conserve their energy usage, and 3) for the tech companies who will sell gear and services to add a new IT layer over the electrical grid. It's amazing what this country can do when we have a smart President.

Tech giants like General Electric ( GE - news - people ), IBM ( IBM - news - people ) and Cisco ( CSCO - news - people ) have all announced their intention to sell equipment aimed at making electrical grids more efficient and responsive, a market valued at around $100 billion, according to a Cisco announcement Monday.
